Sad that Pandagate just returned to the worktab. I would have loved to see him try.

What do those horses do the rest of the year?Northport wrote: ↑Sun May 05, 2024 12:10 pm I hate that we now have to second guess if the Derby winner will even go to the Preakness.
I also hate that the Derby winner is the only Derby runner to go to the Preakness.
We need some of the Australian trainers who run their horses in 3 G1s in 3 weeks in the Spring and Autumn Carnivals to come in and provide some insight.

Train and spell I would presume. Or you have you top ones travelling to Hong Kong, Royal Ascot, or Dubai to race. Yes, their calendar is different, but why is it only impossible in North America in the last five years for a horse to race in two G1s in two weeks.Curtis wrote: ↑Sun May 05, 2024 12:52 pmWhat do those horses do the rest of the year?Northport wrote: ↑Sun May 05, 2024 12:10 pm I hate that we now have to second guess if the Derby winner will even go to the Preakness.

I bet TA was tired. She only had one prep before the Oaks. That’s not much conditioning.Squeaky wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2024 10:02 pm Read on Twitter that Anna a no go for Preakness. Said was very tired after her race. https://x.com/bh_fangst/status/1786920408572137717?s=46

Yea, that was my reaction as well. I don't even know if that even qualifies as a G1 field.Tessablue wrote: ↑Sun May 05, 2024 1:51 pmOne word... oofCoronadosQuest wrote: ↑Sun May 05, 2024 1:44 pmMuth

The question wasn’t rhetorical, my guess would be dirt. Running long on turf is easier on a horse especially when they’re older and have a foundation. The American Triple Crown is an anachronism. There’s a reason that the only trainer to have horses win it since James Earl Carter was president will always have those results looked at sideways. Baffert in his own—ahem—way trained to win the Triple Crown with his two winners, not to just win the Derby and hope for the best. If North American trainers wanted to run horses three times in five weeks at various times they would train for it but financially the system isn’t set up for that. The system is point for the Derby going backward from there and then the Breeder’s Cup going backward from there. If that works out get your stud deal and then go get another. If there was any justice, I’ll Have Another would have made himself into a foundation sire.Northport wrote: ↑Sun May 05, 2024 1:29 pmTrain and spell I would presume. Does anyone have a link to the closing prices in the Preakness future wager, Round 2?
That fact that the Belmont this year is basically the Travers 2.5 months earlier helps to devalue the Preakness. What Derby runner, other than the winner, has an incentive to run in Baltimore in 2 weeks when in 5 weeks you can run in a "Belmont" that's just 1.25 miles?

curious about what the viewership numbers will be like for the Preakness - just read that this recent Derby got the highest number of viewers in years on saturday - all without baffert being present - which i find very funny actually - and i am sure CDI enjoyed hearing it too.

If a whole lot of trainers and owners don't care about the Preakness, not sure why we should expect the public to care.luvsgeldings wrote: ↑Mon May 06, 2024 10:30 am curious about what the viewership numbers will be like for the Preakness - just read that this recent Derby got the highest number of viewers in years on saturday - all without baffert being present - which i find very funny actually - and i am sure CDI enjoyed hearing it too.
But then there's the Baffert hate factor, many will tune in hoping to see him get defeated.
The game for the public is still about cashing tickets that brings 'em back, good luck to those who leave him off their wagers.
I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

Yeah, I don’t think it’s a good comparison - not only is dirt much harder on a horse, most horses in the Derby are lucky if they emerge unhurt. Many had really rough trips and ended up battered and bruised....they need the extra timeCurtis wrote: ↑Sun May 05, 2024 4:46 pmThe question wasn’t rhetorical, my guess would be dirt. Mrh still saying that seize the Grey isn't confirmed until they see his next work. But sent out an email advertising caldera and in that said Grey is targeting the Preakness. It's confusing at the moment. Hopefully they decide to bypass the Preakness. Seize the Grey has a proven track record of being unable to run well back on two weeks rest.
And God forbid the horse got hurt in the race. The pitchforks would come out for mrh AND lukas(not just owners but general public as well)

Has STG ran off of a 2 week layoff more than once?TapitsGal wrote: ↑Tue May 07, 2024 7:56 amMrh still saying that seize the Grey isn't confirmed until they see his next work.
