Jockey Kota Fujioka passed away yesterday at the age of 35. He was unconscious and in critical condition after he was unseated from his mount on the 6th."
That's devastating news.
All racing fans in Japan are really saddened.
Kota Fujioka was an excellent jockey and really a nice guy....
May he rest in peace.

Agreed, Tachyon. I follow Katy's account on X to keep up with the Japanese horses and people, and hoped I wasn't stepping on anyone's toes by posting such incredibly sad news.
The BH has it up today.

Frosten (Hip 559) jumped the inside rail and sustained a catastrophic injury at the OBS Sale. The rider was injured in the fall as well. :(

PETA got it all on video including the euthanasia (as a heads up) and has done several press releases looking at postings on X.

GP Estado do Rio de Janeiro (first leg of the Brazilian Triple Crown) winner Monanfan (Drosselmeyer), a full brother to Canadian champion Filo di Arianna, was euthanized on Sunday after fracturing his LF hock during the Grade II Gervásio Seabra. he was supposed to be shipped to race abroad soon.

Thanks Oasis Dream for sharing those articles.
Once again that's very sad news,
And if you are really interested in the Japanese racing, I hope you will have a look at the link below with a web-translator.
Kota Fujioka was from a racing family and here's a letter written by Yusuke Fujioka, his elder brother and JRA jockey.

I'm sure Yusuke Fujioka will receive strong cheers from all of us as he gets mounts this weekend.
And I can confirm that ''Katy'' is a wonderful account on X which loves all of our horses and people.

Thank you, Tachyon! I live following Katy for a couple of reasons:
A) she "humanizes," both the horses as well as the people involved with them, making it easy to root the horses, as well as the connections, on. It makes them seem more accessible to the public, if that is the right word.
B) I have stated for the last 2-3 years that for every time the Japanese contingent comes, they're watching, and learning.
I believe there is going to come a time when they do win the Derby.

RIP Lonhro. I had to watch his stud retirement video from last year and I feel so bad for everyone who was connected with him. He was well loved.

4/21/24 Race 8 at Mountaineer #9 Aw Ite took a bad step and broke down after the start but the bug boy continued to push the poor horse until he was pulled up on the turn. He was euthanized on the track per Equibase chart but the DRF chart said he was vanned off. Terrible.

There are a few tracks that I don't watch much when Fandrool covers them...and Mountaineer is one of them.
Poor horse.
Hope that 'bug boy' gets taken to the shed over this.

The equibase chart originally just said bad step, vanned off, also. I was watching it live, and it looked so bad, plus the jockey looked like she bailed off, then the horse continued to run on riderless. He was in the stretch before they moved the camera off him.
There was no outrider in site coming to help him last I saw. You would think they would have one near the finish line or by the final turn like most tracks. It is such a trashy track.

Another opening day starting tragically- Askin for a Baskin just broke down badly at Thistledown. Veteran jockey Luis Rivera took a bad fall, no update on him yet. Mauro Cedillo’s horse ran into Baskin, but luckily he stayed on, especially after the traumatic fall he had last year.
