Housatonic Bloodstock has announced the passing of broodmare Wowwhatabrat (Louis Quatorze) due to post-foaling complications (presumably). She had delivered a filly by Blofeld this week.

11 time Champion New Zealand trainer Dave O'Sullivan has passed away.

He trained Horlicks to become the first foreign winner of the 1989 Japan Cup and trained the runner up of the "race of the century" in the 1986 Cox Plate.

My favourite quote from him was after he was retired and his son Lance took over training the stables when his brother moved overseas and he was reassuring everyone that he will keep a eye on things. "I'll be the most overqualified, underpaid headlad ever!"

Here is his Hall Of Fame induction video https://youtu.be/tE73twAdJsA?si=yF0NVnk9gTJEntmM

R.I.P. Mr O'Sullivan.
The 1989 Japan Cup was truly a great race won by the legendary mare Horlicks(NZ).
She defeated Japan's superstar Oguri Cap(JPN).

Thanks RugbyGirl for sharing the video.

The first race in New Zealand today, with all the jockeys wearing a black arm band in tribute to Dave O'Sullivan, was won by Tomodachi trained by Dave's son Lance. The commentator took the extraordinary step of holding a moments silence midrace.

This must have been an emotional victory Lance O'Sullivan dedicated to his father.
That moment of silence midrace was moving.
And I liked the winner's name TOMODACHI of course.
Thanks again for sharing the video.

I know that horses get cast in their stalls all the time. But I can't remember a time that so many high profile horses have died due to it. He is at least the 3rd one this year.

'He Was Loved Every Single Day': Veteran Sire Kafwain Dies At Age 24
https://paulickreport.com/news/bloodsto ... -at-age-24

Kafwain, a longtime stalwart on the California stallion ranks, was euthanized April 24 after suffering a stroke.

The 24-year-old son of Cherokee Run had been living as a pensioner at Premier Equine Rehab near Nashville, Tenn., since September 2023. Jenny Earhart, who runs the 501(c)3 operation, said on social media that the stroke paralyzed Kafwain's hind end, and he never regained motor function.
