King Kamehameha died today at the age of 18. :(
He will be missed.

translation of the JRA poster:
1600m for which the speed is required.
2400m where the stamina and the turn of foot are tested.
Winning both G1s (NHK Mile & Tokyo Yushun), he became the big King of the Fuchu turf.
What will the King conquer next with his big ambition?

Tachyon: Deepest condolences to you and to all racing fans in Japan (and indeed, racing fans everywhere). To lose Deep Impact and now King Kamehameha in such a short period of time is heartbreaking and a huge loss for the sport. They will both be greatly missed.

It really is past- time for stud managers to start re-evaluating the super books they set out for these stallions. Even if it were not already a growing problem in terms of genetic diversity, it is obviously showing out as more data comes in over the years that many of these overworked stallions pay for it in life expectancy and fertility.

Thank you.
It's a very sad day.
Both King Kamehameha(JPN)(Kingmambo) and Deep Impact(JPN)(Sunday Silence) perfectly fulfilled their duties as the flagship stallions for their sirelines respectively and for Shadai.
But it's a shame that they couldn't have long and happy retirements..

TDN has posted a wonderful write-up about King Kamehameha and his legacy.
That will help people understand how much he meant to racing scenes and breedings in Japan.
He was simply great.

OMG not him too!!!   ...I can't even right now. He wasn't in my heart like Deep Impact was, but this is another just huge walloping blow to Japan.

Gah. :( :( :(

ETA: I mean I know he was pensioned, but you just want them to be able to enjoy retirement and watch them grow woolly after a few years, like Storm Cat & Indy. Boo. :(

I believe that King Kamehameha showed his best as he won the G1 NHK Mile Cup.

But he went on to win the G1 Tokyo Yushun in a record time by his talent.
Many think that his Derby was run with one of the most competitive fields of all-time.
In fact he was the only serious challenger who could call a halt to the dominance of the Sunday Silence's descendants in Japan.

That is a terrible shame, and the blow feels that much bigger coming right on the heels of the untimely passing of Deep Impact.

King Kamehameha has a number of promising sons at stud, but Lord Kanaloa will ensure his legacy will remain at the forefront of the Japanese breeding industry.

How beautiful and touching that a nation could love these two talented and gorgeous boys so much that they can honour them like this, and allow the public to share in their memorials.

Lord Kanaloa sired eight winners in JRA over the weekend in tribute to his sire.
Rulership will be represented by his son Kiseki in the Arc this year.
King Kamehameha is likely to be the most influential sire of sires in years to come.

King Kamehameha(JPN) became the champion broodmare sire this year in Japan for the first time, after Sunday Silence(USA) held that title 14 years in a row!!

King Kamehameha is also the sire of the champion freshman-sire this year in Japan Duramente(JPN)!

10 Lovely Day(JPN)(King Kamehameha) 86,130,000

Lord Kanaloa(JPN), the sire of Almond Eye(JPN) and the most expensive stallion in Japan currently, is a son of King Kamehameha, too.
It looks like the King Kamehameha / Kingmambo is becoming a very influential bloodline in Japan after Sunday Silence. :D
Had he been a bit underrated as a sire and/or a sire of sires?

Duramente(JPN), one of the best sons of King Kamehameha(JPN), died of acute colitis at Shadai Stallion Station on Sep 1st 2021.
He was only nine.

As a racer, Duramente won the G1s Satsuki Sho (Japanese Thousand Guineas) and the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) to be named the JRA 3yo champion colt in 2015.
His regular rider Mirco Demuro commented yesterday, ''He is always the best turf horse I've ever ridden''.
As far as I'm concerned, his Satsuki Sho with his devastating turn of foot is especially unforgettable.

-- replay of the Satsuki Sho 2015 (English)

At stud, the royally-bred horse, by King Kamehameha o/o the champion Admire Groove (o/o Air Groove, o/o Dyma Carle...), Shadaii's finest female family, was already emerging as one of the flag-bearers for his sire-line.
He was crowned the champion freshman sire in 2020.
https://www.jbis.jp/ranking/result/?rid ... &x=53&y=17
Also he is the current leader of JRA 2yos sire this year.

He has had five full crops.
Hopefully we will see a few champions who will inherit his legacy.

It's a huge loss.
Sayonara Duramente.

Tachyon,
So sad to read of Duramente’s death. I immediately thought of you when the news emerged.

This year seems particularly brutal with the passing of so many gifted horses. I thought last year was bad, but this year is hard to describe.
