Question; has there ever been any other mare than Puca to have more than one offspring (potentially) running in the Derby?

I'm cheating a little by using the Broodmare of the Year list, but Hildene (Hill Prince and First Landing- who both hit the board!), Anne Campbell (Menifee and Desert Wine), and Take Charge Lady (Will Take Charge and Take Charge Indy) stand out. Probably have been more, I know Mine that Bird and Dullahan were another notable pair of half-siblings. Not sure about any full siblings, though.stelladaniella wrote: ↑Fri Apr 26, 2024 3:11 pm Question; has there ever been any other mare than Puca to have more than one offspring (potentially) running in the Derby?

Gigantic move from Fierceness this morning, that gallop-out was something else. I think a lot of people will bet him as all-or-nothing, but the more I watch him and look at his races, the less inclined I feel to do that. Hoping he draws outside the speed tomorrow.
Haven't seen STG or Endlessly's moves yet. Really liked Catching Freedom's gallop this morning. Haven't done a full deep-dive yet, but I think he may end up as the pick.

I'm seeing people in the seize the Grey owners group bitching about Endlessly's owner choosing to run him saying Endlessly doesn't belong. I'm probably not going to make friends because I pointed out if you want to argue that angle seize the Grey has no business entering as an also eligible either..he's shown nothing performance wise saying he's ready for the derbyTessablue wrote: ↑Fri Apr 26, 2024 3:34 pm Gigantic move from Fierceness this morning, that gallop-out was something else. Dustwhirl produced 1941 Derby/TC winner Whirlaway and Reaping Reward (3rd in the 1938 Derby).
Dustwhirl's dam Ormonda also produced Osman (2nd in the 1927 Derby) and Brevity (2nd in the 1937 Derby).
Marguerite produced 1930 Derby/TC winner Gallant Fox and Fighting Fox (5th in the 1938 Derby). Both by Sir Gallahad.
Lalun, herself a Kentucky Oaks winner, produced Never Bend (2nd in the 1963 Derby) and Bold Reason (3rd in the 1971 Derby)

Thanks for the responses, everyone! Pretty cool how many mares has had more than one derby runner. Would be insane if Dornoch wins this year.
A little bit over a week left!!

It's not the Derby I know, but I always felt bad that Casino Drive got injured after his Peter Pan win and couldn't run in the Belmont. Three Belmont winners in a row from the same dam would have been just unbelievable (and magical). Two in a row, which we did have, was unprecedented enough and still inspires awe. Casino Drive wouldn't have been favored because Big Brown was going for the Triple Crown that year, but as it turned out, Big Brown melted down in the receiving barn and imploded, and it was won by one of the most mediocre horses ever to win the Belmont, D'Tara. 16 years later, it's hard for me to imagine Casino Drive not winning that race!Flanders wrote: ↑Fri Apr 26, 2024 4:22 pmBali Babe had 3. "...as it turned out, Big Brown melted down in the receiving barn and imploded,..."
I had not read that BB "melted down in the receiving barn...," but I did see the photos of his rear hoof (right, iirc) right after it got stepped on at the break. His shoe was half pulled off and the back of one side of the shoe was bent down. It is rather impressive that he still tried to run on it. Pretty sure the discomfort finally dulled his run, along with how much he was fighting his rider down the backside. I gave BB a pass for that race, and he did come back to win after that.

Yeah it's a bit worrisome -- I hoped he would arrive in CD earlier...
But some horses seem to get used to the environment and the surface quickly.
In 2019, Master Fencer(JPN) arrived at the US on a similar itinerary (via Keeneland in his case) and ran his race to finish 6th in the Kentucky Derby.

I saw the shoe photos as well, and I absolutely would have agreed that that was the main reason he ran like he did. But I was sitting in my spot at the bar at Santa Anita about 3 hours before the Belmont with a bank of TV screens above me. One of those screens had a camera trained on Big Brown in his receiving barn stall (not sure, but it might have been the ESPN feed). What I saw taking place there was terrifying! Big Brown was just throwing a fit, trying to rear and buck and kick. I don't know how he was even allowed to run after melting down like that. I had made a few early wagers in the race including Big Brown in the 1, 2, & 3 holes just to cover him, but after seeing that spectacle, I immediately went and canceled them.BaroqueAgain1 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 26, 2024 7:15 pm "...as it turned out, Big Brown melted down in the receiving barn and imploded,..."

I don't know why this detention barn incident with Big Brown before the Belmont Stakes hasn't been talked about more. I just know that it wasn't just something I read about. I saw it happening on live video right before my eyes.

And ICYMI (what I said earlier) people really don't like Dornoch at all for this race.

I’m very torn on who I’d like to win. West Saratoga, Honor Marie and Dornoch are my top picks.. for now

That pic of west Saratoga poking his head out of the horse trailer as he arrived was adorable. You can tell he's very curious about what goes on around himstelladaniella wrote: ↑Sat Apr 27, 2024 6:20 amSee you there!Mylute wrote: ↑Fri Apr 26, 2024 8:44 pmYeah I know it's crazy that I'll be there!!!'stelladaniella wrote: ↑Fri Apr 26, 2024 4:49 pm Thanks for the responses, everyone! I love his sire too, Exaggerator is a sweetheart. And West Saratoga's blinkers really stand out in the crowd! He's a very sweet, hard working boy.TapitsGal wrote: ↑Sat Apr 27, 2024 8:39 amThat pic of west Saratoga poking his head out of the horse trailer as he arrived was adorable.
