Exactly what I was thinking. A long time ago around 1979 Woody Stephens had a horse named Smarten. He could not beat top level horses but won many of the “other” Derbies that summer like the ones you mention. He made a lot of money by avoiding the big boys. He was a tough horse.

Wasn’t he an excellent regional sire, too? In Maryland?Squeaky wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2024 8:08 pmExactly what I was thinking. A long time ago around 1979 Woody Stephens had a horse named Smarten. I always associate him with Canada cause of Classy N Smart and all her foals. But I guess the Canada tie in is there cause of Windfields standing their stallions in Maryland.HB1994 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2024 10:34 pmWasn’t he an excellent regional sire, too? Speaking of that generation-I was there as a kid with my family for General Assembly’s 1979 blow out win in the pouring rain in the Travers as well. He held the record until Arrogate broke it. My dad was upset because he wanted to bet on him but talked himself out of it thinking he wouldn’t like the track.

I talked myself out of buying a share in Mage. Kicked myself later on after everything was said and doneSqueaky wrote: ↑Wed Apr 24, 2024 11:10 amSpeaking of that generation-I was there as a kid with my family for General Assembly’s 1979 blow out win in the pouring rain in the Travers as well. I'd like for him to try more ground on turf honestly before throwing in the towel on him. Not super convinced that he's a sprinter.

That's my (probably wishful) thinking as well. Sigh.CoronadosQuest wrote: ↑Sat Apr 27, 2024 11:23 amI'd like for him to try more ground on turf honestly before throwing in the towel on him. Not super convinced that he's a sprinter.
I ran marathons. I saw the Taj Mahal by Moonlight. I drove Highway 1 in a convertible. I petted Zenyatta.

Forbidden Kingdom is running in the upcoming Kona Gold Stakes at Santa Anita, a 6 1/2-furlong sprint on the dirt. He will be facing formidable opposition in California's favorite sprinter, The Chosen Vron, as well as the classy Express Train, who appears to be cutting back in distance.

Express Train hasn't raced since the 2022 Awesome Again. Wild choice of a return race when he hasn't ran in 18 months.BaroqueAgain1 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 27, 2024 5:10 pm Forbidden Kingdom is running in the upcoming Kona Gold Stakes at Santa Anita, a 6 1/2-furlong sprint on the dirt. It is an interesting choice for the not-known-for-being-wild John Shirreffs.
However, bringing a distance horse back from a long layoff in a sprint is a tactic I have seen before.

The Chosen Vron wins without much stress, Happy Jack 2nd, Express Train 3rd.
Forbidden Kingdom finished last in the 7-horse field. Tried to stay close, but just backed up in the stretch.

Oh yeah I was referring to them deciding to face The Chosen Vron after not racing that long. I guess he ran okay to finish 3rd.BaroqueAgain1 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 27, 2024 5:33 pm It is an interesting choice for the not-known-for-being-wild John Shirreffs.

FK needs to be retired I think-something just not right with him ( breathing, musculoskeletal?)BaroqueAgain1 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 27, 2024 5:36 pm The Chosen Vron wins without much stress, Happy Jack 2nd, Express Train 3rd.

Ill be greatful when derby day is over so people will stop complaining about Seize the Grey running in the pat day over him staying as an AE in a race he had no business entering to begin with. Now people are complaining lukas put Jamie Torres back on the horse. They want Mike Smith, flavian prat or another big rider on him
