Mighty Heart went to Ballycroy Training Centre last spring when it was announced that he would retire. There were offers for the horse to stand in Kentucky, according to Cordes’ daughter Angela Perrin, but the horse had retired sound.
“Larry is getting older and wants to enjoy and watch his horse doing what he loves versus potentially not being able to see his offspring produce,” said Perrin. “He was always sound; he just got some well-deserved time off to be a horse for a bit. He has come back to training thoroughly enjoying what he does and we can’t wait to see what he has to offer as a seven-year-old. There are no high expectations, we just want to let him enjoy doing what he is good at.”
Something doesn't make sense to me. Okay they want to bring him back to the track cause the owner is older and would rather watch the horse race. Why geld him if there was actually interest in standing him in Kentucky or anywhere, eventually? Gelding him at 7 isn't going to return him to his youthful form, I just don't see the point or reasoning behind it.
yeah, i don't understand it either. i wonder if maybe he was test bred and showed fertility issues but if that was the case why wouldn't they just say it? and i get the sentimental value he has to his owner but honestly to me it seems like nowadays he is an allowance horse at best. i was really surprised when i read the article... i hope that if he shows them he has lost his form they retire him permanently no questions asked.
I doubt he was test bred. Especially if they were going for a stud deal because farms that buy stallions get fertility insurance and can't get that if he was already tested. Maybe War Horse Place offered to stand him for the owners but they wanted an actual stud deal? I just say War Horse since he was foaled and raised there and they have stood stallions for owners before. I don't want anyone to think I'm talking crap about the horse cause he is a nice horse that anyone would like to own. But I really doubt there was much or even any interest in Kentucky for him. He doesn't have a commercial pedigree and was a G2 winner. I'm also not mad at the owner for gelding the horse, just deciding to make that decision at 7 is baffling to me if there was supposed interest. All I hope is when the time comes and he shows he doesn't want to race anymore, he is promptly retired and not run down the ranks cause he is a gelding now.

yeah, i totally see what you mean. i wonder if they didn't seek stallion deals in Canada, though? he won 2 legs of their TC after all. maybe the connections strictly wanted Kentucky, which is... something. like you said he wouldn't get anything major there. and as for his form i do also hope they retire if he isn't even good for allowance level anymore... :(

There’s something just wrong about the words gelded, smile and happy being used in the same sentence. It’s all about context.
