Workforce may not be left idle
Back in February, when most people were thinking no further than the Cheltenham Festival, a news item passed by with little fanfare.
It hinted that Workforce, an impressive Goodwood maiden winner trained by Sir Michael Stoute, was a bad bet for the Derby. He is not entered for the race and it was suggested that he was unlikely to be added at the £8,000 second entry stage on April 6th.
This was later refuted by connections and he has now been entered for the Dante Stakes at York in May. Tuesday’s entry stage for the Derby may prove illuminating.

Trying to distil an entire season into one race is rather like pouring a bottle of champagne into a thimble; likely to be a waste of something good. But the performance that Harbinger poured into the two minutes 26.78 seconds it took to win the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot in [...]

Horseracing should always be primarily about the horses but the 2010 Flat turf season was a reminder that there is no substitute for experience from the human element of the equation. Richard Hannon, Sir Michael Stoute and Henry Cecil – combined years with a trainer’s licence 119 – all took the plaudits in different ways. [...]

Given the natural attention that Zenyatta gained for her valiant run when beaten just a head by Blame in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Churchill Downs on Saturday it is easy to forget the winner. However, the senior handicappers from around the world have the task of dealing with the facts alone and Blame’s head [...]

Records are there to be broken because the pursuit of excellence is one of the fundamentals of sport itself. But rarely can such a quest have started from such small beginnings.
