Trainers a little more open-minded
The decision to re-open both the Aon and totepool Games Spirit Chases has met with some success. The two races form part of Newbury’s “Super Saturday” card but initial entries of nine and four respectively did little to back up that billing.
The Aon still has just the nine entries, with nothing rated within 24lbs of Denman, while the Game Spirit has doubled in entry list. And Master Minded finds himself making his return from a rib injury with some worthy opposition in the shape of Voy Por Ustedes.
Now all that Newbury can do is hope that some of them run.

The strike-rates of trainers, and just how relevant they may be, is becoming a bit of a hot topic just now. Paul Nicholls has gone on the offensive to those who have suggested that a below-par spell this month is a sign of problems in his yard. But, while a lack of winners can be [...]

There are plenty of people who have found owning racehorses as a quick route to penury. And even those owners, such as Sheikh Mohammed, the Coolmore syndicate and JP McManus have found that success has come at a cost. However, Clive Smith has proven small can be beautiful – and profitable. To read the full [...]

Some things became clearer after racing at Newbury. At least the results made some things clearer. After a month when jump racing has been in the grip of freezing temperatures, it was the turn of fog to cause the disruption this time but there was no disguising the authority of Big Buck’s in the Grade [...]

Ghizao stamped himself as the leading two-mile novice chaser seen in Britain so far this season when he won the Bathwick Tyres Supports Heros Andover Novices’ Chase at Newbury. A 6lb penalty, for winning a Grade Two race at Cheltenham last month, meant that, on form, Paul Nicholls’ horse would be closely matched with Captain [...]

Nick Williams has only had three winners over hurdles at Newbury in the last five seasons. However, given that they have come from just 10 runners, it is a perfectly reasonable strike-rate and even more interesting in that two of those winners have come in the past two renewals of the Grade One sportingbet Supports [...]
