The ultimate destination may be a few weeks away but Alan King reached another milestone on what has been a long, and sometimes frustrating, journey at Sandown Park.

Last season’s total of 78 winners – which was barely half the number of the previous campaign – is already in sight but King’s yard is about quality rather than simply quantity. The last Grade One winner had been Voy Por Ustedes, in the Melling Chase at the Grand National meeting two years ago, and the victory of Medermit the totepool Challengers Novices’ Chase was another boost for a yard that will go to the Cheltenham Festival looking for a 12th winner at the meeting.

Even by a jump jockey’s standard, Robert Thornton has had a lively season. Five months after snapping three of the four ligaments in his right knee when crashing through a wing on Hell’s Bay at Newton Abbot on July 4, Alan King’s stable jockey completed an amazing recovery and rode his first two winners since returning from that crushing injury today at Plumpton.

The winner’s enclosure is often the place where the truth can be stretched a little as a trainer explains that the victory was the final stage in a long thought-out plan.

But after Smad Place had put the well-backed Dolatulo in his place by 27 lengths in the Q Associates Juvenile Hurdle at Newbury, Alan King admitted that he was as surprised as anyone else. “He only just showed me enough at home,” King said candidly. “He’s not the quickest. Very laid-back horse at home but when I went to saddle him here he was a lot sharper and I thought he might show a little bit more here. It’s stamina that’s won the day here.”
