Aidan O’Brien receives final warning from BHA

Aidan O’Brien’s latest brush with the British racing authorities ended with him being fined more than £10,000 by the BHA and given what amounted to a final warning about his future conduct.

The incident under investigation dates back to the Dante Stakes at York in May. After the colt had beaten Workforce by three-and-a-quarter lengths there was widespread interest in the fact that Cape Blanco appeared to be lame.

Dandino and Joshua Tree try for European win in Japan Cup

Dandino and Joshua Tree face 16 rivals as they attempt to become the first overseas winner of the Japan Cup since Frankie Dettori partnered Alkaased to victory in 2005.

Dandino, who is trained by James Given, has not run since finishing eighth to Arctic Cosmos in the St Leger at Doncaster. Joshua Tree was three-and-a-quarter lengths ahead of Dandino in fifth and since then Aidan O’Brien’s colt got up late to beat More Well by a head in the Grade One Canadian International at Woodbine last month.

Snow Fairy declared for St Leger

There will be 10 runners for the final Classic of the season, the Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster, on Saturday. Ed Dunlop has committed his dual Oaks winner Snow Fairy – weather permitting – and has booked Eddie Ahern for the ride.

There were no major withdrawals from the field, which is headed by Rewilding, the Godolphin runner trained by Mahmood al Zarooni, on whom Frankie Dettori will be attempting to win the race for the third time in six years.

Rewilding heads St Leger acceptors

It used to be said that the fittest horse wins the Guineas, the luckiest horse wins the Derby and the best horse wins the St Leger.

However, this year’s renewal of the Ladbrokes St Leger, at Doncaster on Saturday, is likely to put even more of a premium of stamina with heavy rain forecast for the area this week.

Cape Blanco wins Irish Champion Stakes

As expected Aidan O’Brien won the Group One Tattersalls Millions Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown, for the sixth time, but not with the horse that he was expected to do so.

It was a race for the unexpected and also a reminder not to forget a horse who has won a Classic. O’Brien fielded half of the six runners who went to post and the expectation was that Beethoven, ridden by the trainer’s son Joseph, was in there to make the running for the favourite Rip Van Winkle, who was the chosen mount of stable jockey Johnny Murtagh.

Colm O’Donoghue ready for big race

Yesterday afternoon Colm O’Donoghue arrived at Naas for two rides at a quiet evening meeting. They both finished out of the frame but it was the quiet word he had with Aidan O’Brien that made all the difference.

Aidan O’Brien decides on Cape Blanco rider

Colm O’Donoghue has been given one of the biggest chances of his career with the ride on Cape Blanco in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot on Saturday.

The ride on the Aidan O’Brien-trained colt, who won the Irish Derby at the Curragh last time out, came up for grabs after stable jockey Johnny Murtagh picked up a six-day suspension from the Newmarket stewards for his ride on Starspangledbanner in the July Cup.

No appeal decision from Johnny Murtagh

Johnny Murtagh spent this morning in front of a television. He was watching several video reruns of his victory on Starspangledbanner in the July Cup at Newmarket on Friday.

Not to give him a confidence boost before seven rides at Dundalk in the afternoon, but an idea of the merits of an appeal for the six-day riding ban he incurred for his manoeuvre early in the race, which he has to lodge by late this afternoon.

Starspangledbanner arrived from Australia in the spring with a big reputation and he more than lived up to that when the muscular chestnut unfurled that ground-devouring stride to win the Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot on Saturday.
