Everyone who has ever struck a wager knows what it feels like to back a loser. But those who backed Nevertika at Haydock could be forgiven for thinking that they never stood a chance.

Trainer James Ewart allowed the heavily-backed horse to run even after he ran loose for a circuit but, when the race actually started, Nevertika was pulled up before halfway. Ewart allowed the horse to run because of the wishes of the owners.

Fair enough but, in a sport that relies on gambling for much of its revenue, someone needs to be thinking of those who are at least looking to get a run for their money.
